Press Releases

This week, the Scott administration announced plans to move more than 200 Vermont inmates to a prison complex in Mississippi run by CoreCivic — a multimillion dollar private-prison company formerly known as “Corrections Corporation of America.” Scott’s decision to participate in the monetization of inmates is appalling

This moves comes at a human cost. Scott fails to take into account the trauma of sending these inmates 1,400 miles away from their families and support systems. This decision could have a lasting and profound impact on their reintegration into everyday life.

The Vermont Democratic Party’s 2018 platform states: “We pledge to end the practice of sending Vermonters to prisons out of state, and strenuously oppose any efforts to bring private, for-profit prison companies into any relationship with the state of Vermont.”

Governor Scott has proven time and again that he fundamentally lacks the understanding of our values as Vermonters. Our party is working every day to elect Democrats who do — Democrats up and down the ballot who see the inmate transfer to CoreCivic for what it is: private prisons lining their pockets with Vermont taxpayer dollars.

Shame on Governor Scott for supporting the monetization of our inmates.
