The 1963 Club is a group of donors who give monthly to the Vermont Democratic Party. The group derives its name from a monumental year for Vermont Democrats and liberals around the country. In 1963, Vermont inaugurated Phil Hoff our first Democratic governor of the modern era. Nationally in 1963, activists made key strides for equality, a value we Vermonters hold dear: Betty Freidan helped launch second wave feminism with The Feminine Mystique and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference engaged in the Birmingham campaign to demand civil rights for African Americans. The work of these activists and others like them spawned a liberal movement that reshaped the Democratic Party nationally. For Vermont Democrats, 1963 epitomizes both our political resurgence here and the historic activism nationally that still informs our democratic values.
